Morton's of Chicago

>> Sunday, January 3, 2010

Been wanting to try Morton's of Chicago Steakhouse at Oriental Hotel for the longest time, but for various reasons, that chance did not materialise. Today that wish was fulfilled and I was not disappointed.

The service was good from start to end. We were assigned a specific waiter, Idris, who started by carting out a trolley of different cuts of meat, vegetables and a live lobster and started his introduction of what was on the menu. We were then handed the menu to make our decisions.

Every table is given a complimentary loaf of onion bread, which was quite aromatic. You can actually bring back the loaf if you are unable to finish it. We only managed half but chose not to take the remainder away with us.

For appetizers, we chose the broiled sea scallops wrapped in bacon ($35) as recommended by our server. The scallops was fresh and springy. I cannot remember what the chutney was actually made of, but the combination of the scallops, bacon and chutney was very good.

I read that the lobster bisque ($30) was good and I just had to try it. The soup was creamy, but not overly so and did not have an overly fishy taste. The piece of lobster, however, was a little more chewy than we probably liked.

We took 2 sides with our main course. First up, is the Mashed Potatoes ($16), which was very creamy and light. While mashed potatoes are just mashed potatoes, I think the highlight here is the the creaminess and lightness of it, with hints of pepper.

Our second side is the Macaroni and Cheese ($22). This was slightly crispy on the top, while moist on the below. The cheese actually filled the insides of each macaroni, and you could feel the cheese oozing out with each bite.

For mains, we took the Double Cut Fillet Mignon ($89). It was succulent and juicy; very flavourful and tender. The first bite sent us to heaven.

There's always room for desserts; coincidentally, it was what I had just baked the day before - Morton's Hot Chocolate Cake ($25) served with vanilla ice cream. Theirs was more of a fudgy texture, but unfortunately, the insides were not as ooze-y as what my dining partner had previously. The ice cream was creamy, and as always, the combination was heavenly.

All food above were actually single servings, i.e., they are huge! We shared everything, and in the end, we still had half of the mashed potatoes and macaroni unfinished. All in all, it was a great experience and Morton's did not disappoint, both in terms of food and service.
