Popped by Ji De Chi at Liang Seah Street. I think they have an outlet along Upper Cross Street too.

The first time I came here I had their shaved ice which I think was great. This time I took the hot milk pudding. The pudding a fairly strong taste of milk and was not too sweet. I think it was pretty good here, although still not enough to beat what I had in Hong Kong.

When I was in Hong Kong, I had a dessert which consisted of black glutinous rice and a piece of fresh mango fruit dunked in it. While the combination seemed weird, the sweetness of the black glutinous rice and the slight tang of the mango went well together.

Upon seeing this being served here albeit wrapped in green tea mochi, I decided to try it. The mochi was not overly chewy and the whole combination complemented itself well. I do wish they served what I had in Hong Kong though.

Lai Lai Casual Dining

>> Tuesday, June 15, 2010

After a failed attempt to have lunch at Nando's, we popped over to Lai Lai at Liang Seah Street. This place has been around for more than 5 years, and should be testament to its food.

We both ordered similar set meals, which came with a side dish of your choice per set. We took the tofu with century egg and pork floss. The sauce was quite thick, making the whole dish pretty savoury.

We also took the salted fried chicken. I thought this was a little dry. I think the one at one of the stalls over at Bugis Village fared better.

Our main which was Taiwan Beef Noodles. The soup was a little salty but it had the strong taste of spices and herbs. The beef was tender enough and the noodles were just right. Lai Lai still keeps its standard after so long.

The meal comes also with bubble tea.

wild honey

Back at Wild Honey again, but this time I tried something else.

I took the Tunisian breakfast, which was tomato stew with eggs and chorizo sausages and Brioche bread. The stew came with runny eggs, and overall it was pretty savoury with the tomato stew. I love the Brioche bread which was lightly toasted, yet soft on the inside, and went well when dipped into the stew.

I tried the Banoffee Brulee drink. The texture was almost like that of milkshake and made with bananas and coffee, I think. I think the top was made of meringue. Wasn't too bad, but I felt it would have been better with a little more intense flavour.

fruit paradise

Fruit Paradise has been around for some time and the exquisite presentation of the tarts always catches my eye, but this is my first time trying it out.

fruit paradise grapefruit orange tart

Tried the the Grapefruit & Orange Tart, which had a cream cheese base. I like the pie crust which was crisp and aromatic. The cream cheese base was delicate and overall, it was not too sweet.

fruit paradise chestnut strawberry tart

Chestnut Mont Blanc Strawberry Tart. This has a custard base, although the pie crust was pretty much the same. I never quite fancied chestnut cream as they usually feel pretty bland to me. I still preferred the cream cheese base over this.

Funan Weng Hor Fun & Once Upon a Milk Shake

>> Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Was just trying to settle lunch as this was not the main reason we were in the area, so we went to Funan Weng at Maxwell Chambers.

ipoh hor fun

I took their signature hor fun, which came with prawns and chicken. The hor fun was very thin and soft, which I rather like. The chicken was all meat, yet very tender. Prawns were succulent and fresh, although it looks a little deceiving here as they were in fact sliced in half.

Next we went round the building to our main reason coming to this area - Once Upon a Milk Shake. The decor was interesting with some lower than usual stools and tables.

chocolate milkshake

Was contemplating taking the Litchi or Rum & Raisin initially. At the last minute, I changed my mind and decided to try the chocolate which was supposedly the most popular. It was indeed very creamy and chocolate-y, although somehow it tasted a little like Milo to me. My friend took the Rum & Raisin, which was pretty intense.

cafe beviamo

Had lunch at Caffe Beviamo at Tanglin Mall, where my friend said there was good Sticky Date & Toffee Pudding.

sweet potato sandwich

The cafe serves a variety of sandwiches, pasta, salads and pizzas. I was adventurous and tried the Kumera sandwich. This basically consisted of sweet potato, lettuce, cheese and tomato pesto. It was quite a unique blend of tastes as you seldom find sweet potato in sandwiches, coupled with warm melting cheese oozing with every bite.

sticky date toffee pudding

Finally, the reason why we were here in the first place - Sticky Date & Toffee Pudding. This was presented slightly differently, as it came in squarish slices with the vanilla ice cream sandwiched in between. The pudding was moist and soft, and in my opinion, does not lose out to Marmalade Pantry's. The vanilla ice cream however seemed pretty ordinary, and if I recall correctly, Marmalade Pantry's vanilla ice cream had a richer taste.

Oriole's Cafe & Bar

>> Wednesday, April 7, 2010

My second visit to this place, and I decided to try some other dishes.

I went with the set lunch at $20. For appetisers, I had the smoke ocean trout salad. It was the first time I had smoked ocean trout. Essentially, it tasted like smoked salmon, however, the texture was more like that of a cooked fish.

Next was the ribeye steak. Steak was very tender and the slightly tangy sauce went well with the meat.

On the way out, we passed by Marvelous Cream and they seemed to have a new range of desserts which were soft waffles sandwiched with many different kinds of flavoured creams.

We tried the Hokkaido Caramel and Rich Milk flavour. Sorry, no pics as we devoured it quickly. However, the cream did not give me the queasy, oily feel. It was not overly sweet and the slight bitter of the caramel balanced with it overall.

The Salad Shop

>> Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Salad places have been sprouting up at Raffles Place recently - helps make you and your wallet slimmer at the same time.

Latest one I tried is The Salad Shop somewhere behind UOB building.

Here, prices start at $6.00, where you have your greens + 4 main feeds which are the cheaper ingredients, I guess. Or you can have the Zebra size ($8.00) which is greens + 4 main feeds + 2 supplementary feeds which are a little more pricey than the main feeds. Lastly, there's the elephant size ($10.00) which is greens + 4 main feeds + 4 supplementary feeds.

In all, I think there were almost 50 ingredients to choose from. However, I think their system of ordering whereby you first ticked all the things you wanted, are issued a number and stand around waiting for your number to be called, seemed somewhat chaotic. I think I will just continue going to my usual salad place at OUB centre.

Ah Chiang's Porridge

>> Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Since we are more free on weekdays than on weekends, we ventured out for lunch at Tiong Poh Road.

There were a variety of fish, pork or century egg congee. I took the century egg mixed with pig's liver. Congee was not too salty; pig's liver was not too thick, which would otherwise give me a queasy feel. Dough fritters were a separate order, which we forgot to do, compared to some other places which come with the congee by default.

Also ordered the raw fish; not too sure what kind of fish this was, but the meat was slightly chewy which was a little different from what I tried in the past.

Ended off the meal at Bakerzin. Actually, this is not mine, but my friend's as they did not have the pana cotta which I wanted. The colourful sticks here are made of meringue. Ice cream flavours were cream cheese, vanilla and caramel. The cream cheese taste was fairly strong, although overall, their ice cream seem to feel quite 'diluted'. But now I am quite inspired to make my own cream cheese ice cream.

Cedele Depot

Finally, I had my pancakes!

They were still as comforting as I remember. I even remember the last time I had them was back in late 2007. The pancakes were very soft and fluffy - something which I can never seem to achieve when I tried to cook my own pancakes. The knob of butter was suppose to be vanilla butter, but the vanilla taste wasn't all that strong. What I really love is the maple syrup. The maple syrup here is really thick and dense, unlike the ones you buy from supermarkets which are usually pretty watery.

They had a menu of lassi drinks as well - basically yogurt-based drinks. I decided to try the Apple Cinnamon Lassi. I think it was simply apple juice mixed with yogurt and lots of cinnamon powder. Really nothing special about this.

Ah Chew's Dessert

>> Wednesday, December 9, 2009

I had wanted to go to Cedele at Raffles City for some pancakes, but up till almost 11, it was still not open, even though the website had stated it would at 9.30am. So, in the afternoon, I decided to have desserts to comfort myself.

Took the cold steamed milk and egg custard, which was soothing given the searing heat of the day. The egg-y taste was a little stronger than that of the milk. I would have preferred otherwise. I so miss the Yee Shun Milk from Hong Kong!

I bought home the mango sago with pamelo as well. It was not too sweet, although I think the pomelo was a little too bitter. The flavour was also quite dense and creamy, but all in a good way.
